Travel Tips: Saving Money for Your Vacation

You want to take a vacation but when you look at the balances in your checking account and savings account, your budget will not allow it. There are some things you can do to save money for your vacation.

You should start the planning process as soon as you can. The sooner you determine how much money you will need, the more successful you will be in achieving your goal. This may be a trip that you have dreamed of for a long time. Depending on where you want to go, it may take you a year to save for that dream trip.

Make a commitment to save for your trip. You can put the money in the bank in a special travel account or you can save it in a piggy bank at home. It should be in place where you will not be tempted to use it.

Do you have a lot of items in your home that you no longer use? Why not have a yard sale. Price the items cheaply so that people with buy them. Place the money you receive in your travel account. Research items that are selling on auction sites such as eBay. If you have similar items, open an account and sell them. You may get a better price for them than by having a yard sale.

Most of us are strapped for cash at some point, but there are some things that we can do without. Look at the items you purchase on a weekly or monthly basis. If there are items you can eliminate from your expenditures, take the money you save and put it in your travel account. You can also go through your purse or pockets and pull out the loose change you have accumulated and add that to your travel account.

Some other suggestions for saving include:

• Make a thermos of coffee at home for the ride to work instead of stopping to buy it.
• Cut down on going out to dinner and going out to the movies. Instead, order a pizza and rent a movie.

If your job allows you to work overtime, ask your supervisor about working extra hours. Discuss this with your family because it will mean having less time to spend with them. If you do handy work, see if you can help your neighbors. Let them know you are saving for a special vacation.

Look for special bargains for your special vacation. Determine when you have to book your vacation to receive the special price. Generally, you can reserve your vacation in advance and there will be a date when the remainder of the money is due. Do not forget to include spending money in your vacation fund.
